Yep. And it happens out. Just in a like a small path over the earth, over certain countries, over whatever. Um and if you're visible from those places. Yeah, and if you're in the right place, like bomb.com. So um at 5 43 p.m. in those areas. So Greenland, Iceland, parts of Spain, and like a little touch of Portugal, they will see it. So that will be 11 44 a.m. or 11 43 a.m. where we are. And I bet you I'll just be typing some dumb email at that time.

Um, so let's back up a little bit and talk about eclipses in their many forms. So we have the big daddy, aka the total solar eclipse. And like you said, it's when the moon is just in the right place between Earth and the Sun, and it completely blocks the sun. So we have day turning to night, temperature drops, and adults around or across the world in the right places, outside crying together, and it's magical. It's those people outside together, they are witnessing something that they have seen or never seen before, and it is it's spiritual if I've ever felt it.

And I think the reasons why everybody has like that kind of reaction to it is because back before we knew that this was like a scientific phenomenon, it was very much like a what's happening? Why is this, where's the sun going? What's what monsters are, you know, like this this is. Okay, it's back. Okay, it's fine. Yeah, everything's back. Everything's fine, but that's their life source, right? So I mean like growing crops and everything relies on the sun.

Yeah, and all of a sudden it's like, wait, what's happening?

I mean, uh lots of cultures worshipped the sun for a very long time, and so they could think that if they didn't do something correctly, yeah, they've made a choice, and all of a sudden the moon's gone. Yep.

So during the time that the moon is completely blocking the sun, that's called totality. So of the whole entire eclipse, because there's you know, it obviously moves and shields partial amounts of the sun until and completely does it call total called totality. And you don't have to wear the solar eclipse glasses at that time, you can just take them off, and it's incredible.

And his brain. Um okay. Good good for him. So these total solar eclipses happen every 18 months, which is crazy to think that it happens that regularly, but like you may never see one in your lifetime.

Um, and that's because the path of these um total solar eclipses changes all the time. It's, you know, oftentimes over oceans or remote territories. And so careful planning has to take place for you to like be in the right place at the right time. But if you just wait 375 years, that's easy. Somewhere in that 375 years, it will cross your path.

Yeah. Um okay, then we have the secondary, the secondary cool baby, which is the annular solar eclipse, or so fittingly called the ring of fire. Yeah, girl. Um, this is when the moon again is between the earth and the sun, but the moon is further away from the earth, so it doesn't fully obstruct the sun. Right. So you get solar corona. Yes, sure. Way to still my thunder.

But uh basically a flaming donut in appearance. Um, and that one you do need your solar glasses for because the sun is still shining and it will still burn your eyeballs. Correct. Okay. Then the last category is uh just a partial solar eclipse, and that's just when the moon clips out just part of the sun, like taking a bite of a cookie and then leaving.

Okay. Well, never mind. Screw you. I wasn't offering them anyways. Okay, so then there's another phenomenon, which is when the earth is between the moon and the sun. And that one is called a lunar eclipse, but we aren't here for her today. Right. We are here for the total solar. So again, today, on Wednesday, August 12th, one lucky part of the world will experience it. And again, we'll just be doing our like dumb little lives over here. While people are getting their lives changed, they are experiencing something. Maybe they're making moon water. I don't even know what people do. You'll tell me later.

So how long does totality last? So that again, that's when the moon is completely obstructing the sun. It can be anywhere from just a few seconds or up to seven minutes. But for this particular one that's happening August 12th, it's only like two and a half-ish minutes because um the moon is like a little bit further from the earth, and so um it's closer to the sun, so it doesn't have as much totality. And that's in girl minutes, okay, not boy minutes.

I did I did read Twilight Eclipse, but no, I I experienced one myself. Oh, gotcha. Yeah, the personal experience. So let me set the stage. Okay. It's 2017, it's several months before my birthday.

And my husband says, Hey, what if for your birthday we went to Lander, Wyoming for the total solar eclipse, and it's happening right on your birthday.

And I was like, um, okay, like tell me more. And he's like, Yeah, some friends are also interested, so we're gonna like kind of start looking into it. And I do not remember how far in advance we were talking about this. But, anyways, so they tried to get a hotel, but there was nothing available because we were very late to the game. Right. The hotels get sold out like a year in advance when there's gonna be a solar eclipse because we know that they're gonna happen well in advance, so it's predictable. Anyways, this friend calls around to campgrounds and finally finds somebody that says, Well, we don't have any open camp spots, but there is such a demand. We do have like a big grassy field that we're gonna open up for tent reservations. And I was like, Okay, so panic is immediately setting in because in 2017 I was not the camping girly that I am today. Right. I was a glamper at that time in my life, and not even a glamper, like I wanted full everything. Right. Um, so I was jumping to all sorts of conclusions because clearly, if the the hotels are full, the campgrounds are full, the world is converging onto land or Wyoming.

For the eclipse. And I had little kids at the time. Like, I think my youngest, if it was 2017, my youngest would have been like one and a half. Oh, okay. In August. Yeah. And again, it's my birthday.

And I'm like, I'm swimming in a tent on my birthday. I don't want to shit in the woods on my birthday.

But, anyways, so I feel like we had to buy all the supplies to go because we didn't even have a tent at the time, and my fares were all over the place, and I was seriously worried that we wouldn't even be able to get food and water. I remember being like, we're gonna pack this cooler, but it's gonna run out of ice and there won't be any ice in land or Wyoming. And so I was just trying to pack everything that I possibly could to go on this thing. So, anyways, we get there, maybe like a day or two before it starts, and the campground is indeed full, is maybe like a KOA. I don't even know. I don't remember. But this field that they spoke of completely empty when we get there. Okay. And it's like maybe the size of two or three football fields. Okay. And that's in like made up spatial awareness by me, because I have no idea. Yeah.

But by the end of it, by the time the eclipse came, there was maybe five other groups that set up camp in that field. Really? So this big rush of people to get to lander ended up being like us and like five other people setting up tents.

So these camp posts very much oversold the hype and threw me into a complete meltdown.

Um, and spoiler, this town didn't run out of resources at all. It was like a busy Fourth of July weekend in Lander, Wyoming.

So that was it. So, anyways, overall the trip went great. I survived the tent. Um, we went to a park to watch the event, and it was truly indescribable. I was sold. I was I was absolutely like, this is where to be. And of course, I'm gonna butcher the description. Um so while totality is the main event, it's like the main thing, you're ready for it, you're ready for it. It is all the minutes leading up to it that are also just magical. Because you're wearing your glasses and the moon is moving and you're seeing it like crescent, crescent, crescent, and everything just starts happening. The light fades, but not like a normal sunset, like you would think. It just everything loses saturation and becomes like a blue-gray. Yeah, you're looking at me like you've heard this before.

No, I just remember this time. I remember I remember it like have you been to one?

I didn't even ask.

I haven't been to one where you could see like totality, but I existed at that time. I remember looking at the shadows on the ground and they looked very like weird. Yeah. Yeah.

Because like they were cut like it's shadows from both sides. Um, but again, yeah, so just the color loses saturation, everything kind of come becomes monochromatic, but also very sharp. Everything is still like the right colors or the right tones, I guess you'd say. Um, and then there's a sudden drop of temperature, like five to ten degrees, and you're feeling cold or ten to even ten to fifteen, probably. And it's just because that solar radiation cuts off. And then, like, as it gets closer and closer and closer, nature starts to quiet, like the birds stop chirping, and it's reported that dogs get confused or even anxious, but I don't know, because I didn't have a dog at the time, but the ambient noise of nature just completely shifts, and it's like turned off, like that's cool. And so, and then there's also like right before totality hits is like shadow snakes and shadow or shadow bands, which are just these very thin, wavy lines of alternating light and dark that can be seen moving in parallel on just like the cement, just plain surfaces, and then it stops. And scientists don't fully understand what it is, but it just it just occurs in the seconds leading up to it. So I just imagine it's like right before the sun is completely obstructed, and it's just like all of a sudden those like last remaining rays are just hitting the earth, and it's just like cool, yeah.

So cool. So, like I said earlier, I think once in totality, you can take your glasses off and just look directly at the sun or where the sun would be. Right, that's cool, and it's amazing, and it's you know, there's a lot of pictures out there of like a full total solar eclipse or whatever, a total solar eclipse, as you would call it, as one would say, and it just doesn't even remotely look like what it actually looks like with your physical eyes.

So I would like to pause right here and just have you reflect on the fact of how much you've grown since the what in the nine years that you've been through that, as far as like being a camping girl I know and like that's loving the universe, and like you're really cool to think about, yeah.

And like coming out of the like coming out of the motherhood trenches, because I was that was my last child, so all of the lasts were my last lasts.

Yeah, I am. Oh my gosh. It's really cool to think about. I'm a new person, and also uh a spiritual woo-woo that happened in Leo, like like that you it's happening again.

Yeah, so when people are like, How was your birthday? And I was like, I don't know, it's like kind of good. Like my husband ordered up an eclipse for me.

That was kind of good. I just thought a whole change of my life in those last nine years. Anyways, I just think it's really cool to like I don't know, like hearing you talk about it, like seeing it.

Because I was like scared going into this experience, where nowadays I'd be like, Oh, we're going somewhere without like the proper resources. I'll be alright. Yeah, I'll be anyways. So truly incredible from that day forward. And I was uh get ready for it, umbraphile.

But anyways, an umbraphile, which means shadow lovers, and it's from the Latin term umbra for shadow and phylos for loving. It could be worse with no circumstances, yeah. Okay, so where has this experience taken me? Well, in 2023, my family and I went to Capitol Reef for the ring of fire.

Cool. Yeah.

So in 2023, we were lucky enough to be able to travel to Capitol Reef National Park in south central Utah for the annular solar eclipse. Okay. So, like I mentioned, um, that's when the moon doesn't fully eclipse the sun. So, like a little ring of fire or corona, as you called it. But at that point in 2023, I was well into my camping girly era. And we towed down our cute little pop-up tent trailer, and we also had planned in advance, so we were able to get a camp spot, and we went with our um sister and brother-in-law, which was so, so fun. Anyways, we go down to Capitol Reef National Park. It was the first time our family had been there, and we got to stay right in the national park in the Fruta campground. And if I remember correctly, the park had several events going on around this. They were definitely all in, of course. They would be.

Yeah, Capital Reef is a dark sky.

There are several events that the day before we were able to go learn about the eclipse, and we were able to make viewing devices. Which I want to say, one of the viewing devices that they helped us make, you could hold in front of your phone and actually take a picture.

So they had a special. Team there with special solar telescopes set up so that you could go and view you know all the way before and after the ring of fire, and you could even see like the dark spots of the sun with this telescope. It was crazy.

And there was also um we were able to see what's called edge prominences, which is our like fiery arches and plasma loops of gas. And so, you know, we all draw the sun as being circular, but it's not circular, it's a ball of gas, and so there's you know, gases coming off of it in arches and everything like that. So you were able to see those edges of prominence. So it was really, really, really cool. So, anyway, so that was the Ring of Fire annular solar eclipse, which was super exciting, and that was in 2023. Then in 2024, there was another total solar eclipse in the United States, and that one just my spouse and my son made the journey. It was kind of a last minute, like, should we go? Should we go? Should we go? Should we go? So their travel was um less than ideal. I think they had to fly into Chicago and then drive for quite a while. They ended up staying with um the friends that they went with, they ended up staying with their family in Indiana. Um, and I think overall, with the amount of driving that they had to do and in such a small amount of time, I wasn't too jealous that they got to go see that without me. But that was pretty cool.

And it'll be visible to parts of South America and Africa. So you happen to be in those areas, February 2027, check it out. Then the next total solar eclipse will be May 2027, and it will be visible from southern Spain. Again, so wow, Spain. This being hoarding all the goodness. Um, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. And the website said you could even see it from northern Maine.
