The Ocean? None of Our Business
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode, Ashley explains what is so unsettling about the ocean. It turns out the ocean is vast, deeply terrifying, and frankly, none of our business. Tune in as we cover:
- Point Nemo: Why the most isolated drop of water on Earth leaves you closer to astronauts than land dwellers.
- The Unexplored 80%: Why ignorance is absolute terrestrial bliss when it comes to the abyssal zone. Especially when that 20% is already terrifying.
- Aquatic Hostility: A friendly reminder of exactly how many ways the ocean can and will take you out. So keep her clean and leave her alone!
Stay dry, stay safe, and let the fish keep their secrets.

What's up everybody? My name's Ashley.
SPEAKER_03And I am known as Christy.
SPEAKER_02Uh it's true. How are you?
SPEAKER_03I'm good. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_02I'm good. Yeah. Yeah. It's um beautiful weather outside right now.
SPEAKER_03It's sweater weather.
SPEAKER_02We're inching closer and closer to fall, and I am here for it.
SPEAKER_03I know it was getting pretty hot. And but yeah, I've been wearing sweaters the last couple days, and I'm I'm reborn.
SPEAKER_02I am. I'm just like so much happier. I saw, I think I posted it on my Instagram story, but it said something to the effect of my mood is directly related to my sweat levels and how cluttered my house is.
SPEAKER_03Well shit.
SPEAKER_02And I feel that in my soul.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I am a different person in fall and spring than I am in winter and summer. I just I thrive in those times.
SPEAKER_03I can't wait to see it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. We've been friends for how many years, and you're just like, cool, one day she's gonna have to finally get her shit together.
SPEAKER_03I can't wait. Well, fun fact, you told me you were on your way today, and one hour later you were at my house.
SPEAKER_02Hour later. Yeah, because you told me you still need a shower, and I was like, well, then I'll go get coffee.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And take my time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Apparently walk here. All right. You got coffee over state lines. I did.
SPEAKER_02I had to. Don't you know? The state we live in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Nowhere open.
SPEAKER_02Um, okay, so do we have any updates, corrections from our last episode?
SPEAKER_03Probably not. Probably not. Still just like be a good person and live like Dolly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, do it, lady. Um, I do have a brief update about things that you've influenced me to do. Oh, okay. Tell me. You are pretty much an influencer for me, just so you know. Oh, thank you. I told you about this yesterday, but the cleaning combo of powder tie and bleach and hot water.
SPEAKER_03That's that's from Go Clean Co. on Instagram. Go clean co. A Canadian.
SPEAKER_02It's the best. My floor. It's just amazing. My house, everything smells clean, but not like overpowering. Yeah. These weird florally sensitive stuff.
SPEAKER_03It's not that it just smells clean, it is clean because it cuts through everything. That it's a powerful combination.
SPEAKER_02It's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm gonna do it later.
SPEAKER_02Do it, do it. I also just barely got me a carpet cleaner, and I carpet cleaned my rug, and it is it looks like a brand new rug.
SPEAKER_03New woman who diss.
SPEAKER_02And that's disgusting.
SPEAKER_03If you see like the before and after pictures, have you ever seen those rug cleaning videos? Was it like that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Gross.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Did you wear rubber boots and no?
SPEAKER_02Okay. I have tried to do that before though, where I um where I pressure washed it. Because this is not the first time I've I've been fighting this rug forever because my dumb ass bought a you bought a white rug. I bought a white rug and I have dogs and kids. So but it's beautiful, it's a beautiful rug. I love it. And anyways, I tried to power wash it once and I did the whole thing and it still didn't look anywhere like how it looks today. And I am living life now.
SPEAKER_03Well, you did so I went over to Ashley's house last night for fantasy football draft, an in-person one. That was my first in-person draft. So that was kind of fun. Yeah, um, but we walked in and I was like, shoes, no shoes, and you said it doesn't matter. It does matter. It does matter. You need to go shoeless in your house.
SPEAKER_02I would love to. Would you please tell my husband that?
SPEAKER_03Hey, Ashley's husband, go shoeless, man. That's gross.
SPEAKER_02It's just so gross. It's disgusting.
SPEAKER_03I almost bought, I almost brought over my house slippers because I don't like to walk barefoot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But I also didn't want to wear shoes in your house if you were a shoeless house, but then I forgot, and so then when I walked in and your husband was like, it doesn't matter, whatever. And I'm like, all right, I'm wearing my shoes in, I guess.
SPEAKER_02I would love to be a shoeless house, and my kids never wear shoes anywhere we go.
SPEAKER_03So they're so that's also another thing you have to do is if you're a shoeless house, then you have to wear shoes outside.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. See, this is what I'm saying. It doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_02You know what?
SPEAKER_03I have dogs too, and that doesn't they don't put shoes on when they go outside, so you know what future Ashley can have a shoeless house one day where everybody wears shoes outside and no shoes inside.
SPEAKER_02And my house is gonna be quiet and clean, and I will probably be very depressed. I don't think so. Maybe I don't know, but thank you for putting me on to the bleach and the tide because it's changed my life forever.
SPEAKER_03Um and it's quick, it's just like an easy little like and you just throw a rag in there and then you just walk around and just like wipe where people touch.
SPEAKER_02I have a spin mop too.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I like I do it with that too. That's how I wash my floors when I mop my floors. That's the best.
SPEAKER_02Um, another update would be the witchy woo-woo episode regarding the um eclipse. Kim. So listen, I am a baby witch.
SPEAKER_03So it takes a lot of like you're getting your your your witchy wings.
SPEAKER_02I'm getting my witchy wings. My I'm finally getting, I'm a new broom, is what they call it, actually. Um that's cute. It is pretty cute. But it takes a lot of time and research to do that episode justice. And I'm not sure that by the time I get it done that it will even be relevant anymore to that specific series of eclipse. Okay. Um, I have it outlined thanks to Gemini, and I I did pull our birth charts, and I've been like looking at our birth charts and going over them with one of my favorite astrology astrology books that I have, but it's just like so complex to even explain like all the different things, and I'm like a little scared to confidently say things to the masses about it.
SPEAKER_03So So maybe what you do because it is rather complicated, is write it all out how you want it and how you like it, and then like explain it to me like I'm five. Because that's honestly what you're gonna have to do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So you can write it super complex, but then you'll then you can dumb it down for me.
SPEAKER_02Maybe, maybe I'll do that. I don't know, there's just so many things, and I'm afraid I'm gonna forget something or say something wrong and like not do it justice. Oh, okay. And there are so many other people that have studied this kind of stuff for like decades, years and decades, and um you're not a you're not a full-blown witch yet.
SPEAKER_03I'm not a full-blown witch yet. It's fine. I'm not ESPN, you're not a full-blown witch.
SPEAKER_02I was just thinking that because other people are bitch, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I I will own that. I will own that. Um, but yeah, there's people way more qualified than I am. That would be better to let them continue to speak on it. So I will say this though, if you are feeling off, like in your day-to-day life, I highly recommend Googling where the moon and planets are in relation to your birth chart because I promise you it makes you feel a little less crazy. Um, at least it does for me. And it at minimum it's a nice scapegoat for being a bitch.
SPEAKER_03There you go. You can't plan it. You can't look at it and not like if you're feeling fine and then you look at it and then it's like, oh, that I should, I should probably be a bitch right now. You can't do that. You can't go, you can't go and say, Oh, now I'm gonna change my attitude, but you can go and look at it and say, Well, that explains it.
SPEAKER_02I will say, from what I've heard from astrology, it works better if you look, if you reflect backwards. You can kind of see where things are. Um, but it's pretty, it's pretty fascinating. It's so complex, and there's so many different systems and people that teach it. So I I don't know. I don't know if I'm gonna do that episode because it is a lot. Yeah. And I don't know.
SPEAKER_03That's what I'm saying. Write it how you want it and then dumb it down for me.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Not dumb it, like I'm a smart person, but just like reel it in so you don't lose me.
SPEAKER_02I it's almost like I need somebody to like read it and double check me, though. You know what I mean? That's not like not the internet, because the internet is trash, straight up trash. But anyways, one day I'll maybe do that. I don't know. Um, but you were gonna say something about fantasy football.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yes. Going back to fantasy football. So we had our um, I think in the last episode we talked about how we had done an in-person fantasy draft. And I meant to say in that episode, I got to meet your wonderful neighbors. Yeah, they're amazing. Oh my gosh, like what a fun, what a fun situation you have going on. Yeah, and not only like, you know, everybody has fun friends, but like you have fun friends that just live over a ladder around the corner.
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah, it's how fun.
SPEAKER_03They're so sweet. All the kids were chaos, and it made me appreciate my children being older.
SPEAKER_02You mean because my daughter literally shit in the yard like a dog?
SPEAKER_03And then your dog ate it, yeah. Well, and I love it. Ashley had a screen door that was closed, but her kids have just busted through that screen door, so they like they don't have to open the screen door anymore. I don't even know why we had the screen door closed, to be honest, because this they they just run through the screen. I don't know, a three-foot-tall ripping the screen. They're just running straight through it. So I guess yeah, it was it was screening out 95% of the outside, but the kids could just run straight through it.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, oh, that checks. I need one of those magic mesh things. Have you seen those like infomercials? I need one of those.
SPEAKER_03You were trying to do the magic mesh you mesh, you just don't have the magnets. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Maybe we'll install that feature later.
SPEAKER_03Anyways, but yes, I did appreciate meeting those guys because we've had a like a little bit of a chat going on and it's like a pretty spicy chat. Yeah. And uh, but it was fun to meet everybody in person. So yeah. Can't wait to kick all their butts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's gonna be great. And I'm the coach in that league, so that'll be real fun for combish everybody.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Okay. That was all right.
SPEAKER_02So let's get into the actual episode meets now that we've um talked your ear off about me. Disclosed. Yeah. Um, okay, so I've said it before and I will say it again. The ocean, none of my business. It really isn't. It's none of my business. And today I'm gonna talk to you about why the scariest thing in our universe is actually probably the creatures living right here on this planet and not even talking about the billionaires this time.
SPEAKER_03Just oh, okay. Just not those not those blood suckers. Nope.
SPEAKER_02So before we do that, let's talk about some key facts about the ocean. So, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also known as NOAA, I'm just gonna I'm just gonna keep talking about it as NOAA N-O-A-A. Um, the ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface. So that's about 360 million square kilometers or about 139 million square miles.
SPEAKER_03Three-fourths.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot. 97% of all the water on earth is the ocean. And of the tiny percentage that isn't part of the ocean, it's frozen glaciers and ice caps. Um but if this is making you thirsty, let me just remind you that less than 1% of all the water on earth is fresh water. We can just take the salt out of it. No, babe. That's not how it works, friends. It makes things worse. It makes things crazy. And I'll get into that in just a second. So we the ocean's big is basically what I'm saying. Um is it big? It's like big.
SPEAKER_03Is it big like boy big or girl big?
SPEAKER_02It's girl big?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like on a girl scale.
SPEAKER_02It's average. Um, but it's also deep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So the ocean is about 3.7 kilometers or 12,100 feet deep.
SPEAKER_03And that's why it's none of your business.
SPEAKER_02Because it just That sucker is doomed.
SPEAKER_03It just goes down, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um the deepest point is the Mariana Trench, or I think that's how you say it, right? Yeah. Um also I they said challenger deep. I don't know which one's the correct. I think it's I've always heard Mariana Trench. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03If that's the right word that we're using.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So it's deeper than Mount Everest is tall. I hate that. I hate that.
SPEAKER_03I don't.
SPEAKER_02I I mean, I hate that. Yeah. That's scary.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You could take Mount Everest and turn it upside down and put it in this trench, and it would still be deeper than that.
SPEAKER_03That's why I don't go in those deep waters.
SPEAKER_02You literally need like oxygen to climb Mount Everest.
SPEAKER_03And guess what, babe? Going underwater, you need oxygen too.
SPEAKER_02And also you would die. Yeah. You would die. Um, so that is about 10,935 meters, which is 35,876 feet deep.
unknownOof.
SPEAKER_02But added to the deepness is that light only penetrates the top 200 meters or 656 feet. So it is not only deep, it is dark.
SPEAKER_03And that's like where there's uh like that, what did you say? 260? 200 and something? How deep does the light penetrate?
SPEAKER_02Uh 656 feet.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I'm not even close.
SPEAKER_02Um 200 meters.
SPEAKER_03So that oh, 200 meters. So that's just where even a fraction, a fraction, a fraction, a fraction of light penetrates. Like, think about it, even just looking down into water that's like six feet deep. Sometimes you can't even see the bottom.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_03So none of my business. It's dark. I don't like the dark. Uh-uh. Do you want to know why you and I don't like the dark? Why? Because we have brown eyes.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. That's true.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And that doesn't let in the that doesn't let in a lot of light. So while you and I are like awesome, we can go outside when it's super bright and not need sunglasses. It also makes it so we don't see well in the dark. And that's why we're afraid of the dark. But also Are you afraid of the dark? I just assumed. I I am.
SPEAKER_02I'm afraid of like dark, dark. So I think I was listening to the Morbid podcast recently, and they were doing a like rehash about Jack the Ripper, and they were talking about how we can't even conceptualize what dark is because we're so used to light pollution, we're so used to streetlights. We're so we don't even know what it's like to like have a lantern be the only source of light. And they were talking about like you you can't even like think in your brain what darkness is until you're like out in the middle of nowhere, no light pollution, like dark, like you can't see the hand in front of your face, kind of dark. Yes, that that's scary to me.
SPEAKER_03But also, like the other night, I woke up in the middle of the night and I was like, man, it is dark. And I like looked over to look at the clock and the power was out, and so it was like dark, dark. Not saying it was like dark, sky, dark, but it was dark, dark, dark, dark, and I was scared.
SPEAKER_02I feel like that word's not making any sense anymore. Dark? Dark. Like in Ted Lasso when he's like, it does it's just lost its meaning. Yeah. So yeah, so it's deep, it's dark, and it's scary.
SPEAKER_03And cold.
SPEAKER_02And cold and heavy. Um, but we'll get into that. So before we talk about that, um, let's talk about one of the coolest facts that I found, and I could have done a whole episode on this because it's really fascinating. Um, a major way that marine life and humans that rely on marine life um to like survive and thrive is due to the AMOC or Atlantic Meriadonial Overturning Circulation. So this is the circulation of water that brings water from the north to south and back, and it takes quite a while, um, but it takes warm water and nutrients to certain parts of the globe, which in turn helps sustain ocean life and those humans that rely on ocean life as part of their diet. I encourage you guys to go look at this because, like I said, I I got lost in a rabbit hole about this, and this entire episode could be on the importance of the specific circulation and how climate change is impacting this. Was it about El Nino? No, but that plays into your whole life.
SPEAKER_03I learned about that from like learning about El Nino, but it's about yeah, how the that lower stuff comes up that's very nutrient-rich water, and it's also cool, so that's what helps cool the earth. It's that circulation of that way.
SPEAKER_02And then then also like the salt and how that helps like the the salt moving helps things to I it was it was so fascinating. I highly recommend looking more into it because it was really fascinating. I'm just gonna stick to like the surface level stuff right now, because like I said, going too deep freaks me out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. She wants to sleep tonight.
SPEAKER_02I would like to sleep tonight. Um, and then another cool fact, so it's fairly common knowledge, thanks to Sir Isaac Newton, that the tides are due to gravitational pull from the moon and and sun. Um, but as I researched this more, I learned that the um gravitational forces do not control when high or low tide events occur. And that's more to do with the geography and shape of the earth. So, like the way roughly that I understood it is that wherever the moon was was pulling the water that way, and then that's what happens with the tides is the water is pulled to one side of the earth where the moon's at, and then as it goes around, it's pulled on the other side and and whatever. But it apparently it's more nuanced than that.
SPEAKER_03There's more Yeah, it's way more calm, way more complicated.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so um, because of land masses, and then there's a slight bulge at the equator of the earth, which it's okay, Queen. We know everybody's gonna look at the earth. Everybody's got a bulge at their equator, it's fine, but the pull of the moon isn't as consistent as we would think. So I highly recommend again that you guys go all read about that because that's also really fascinating. So it's not just the moon, but like everything. Yeah. Also, this is all simulation.
SPEAKER_03Time isn't real.
SPEAKER_02Um, but because the ocean is so large, it's kind of impossible to know the exact number of species that live there. So, according to Noah, and I quote Scientists estimate that 91% of ocean species have yet to be classified, and more than 80% of our ocean is unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. So, in summary, it's none of my business.
SPEAKER_03Oh gosh, it's that's a lot of unknown. 90% of creatures in the ocean are an unknown.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_02And and 80% of it is like like think about 80%. Like that's that's almost all of it. That's that's that's a good bet.
SPEAKER_0380% is a good bet. Yeah. If I have 80% odds, I feel good about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And but if I have if I have a 20% odd, I don't I don't have good odds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. We have nothing. We know nothing.
SPEAKER_03So like people are like you know nothing, Jon Snow.
SPEAKER_02People are like, oh, I'm afraid of sharks. Like, no, I'm not afraid of sharks. I'm afraid of the stuff we don't know about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, sharks are probably fine.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I wonder how I wonder how low sharks go. I wonder if there's sharks that we don't know about.
SPEAKER_02Oh, 100% there's sharks we don't know about. 100%.
SPEAKER_03Because whatever's down there has to be able to endure so much. A lot of pressure. A lot of pressure, a lot of cold.
SPEAKER_02Which means their jaw strength is probably insane. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's none of my business.
SPEAKER_02That's none of my business. So those are some fun facts. Facts. Um you're using fun really literally. Yeah. So while I did learn so much while researching this episode, it didn't make me want to get into the ocean anytime soon.
SPEAKER_03I want to get into the ocean soon. I'm gonna get into the ocean soon. I'm going.
SPEAKER_02And I'm going to the ocean soon. I really don't think we can even, like I said with the dark, I don't think we can comprehend how vast the ocean is, and that freaks me out. Like we talk about like, oh yeah, the ocean's big, it's deep, whatever. No, like 80% of it we don't know anything about. That's insane to me. And it's so vast that there are points in the ocean, well, a point in the ocean, where you can't reach land.
SPEAKER_03So so say that again. Because there's many points in the ocean where you can't reach land. I would dare say all of the ocean.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so what I'm trying to get at here is that there's a point in the ocean, cutely dubbed point Nemo. And that is closer to astronauts on the ISS than any known land mass.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's kind of cool.
SPEAKER_02Space.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Oh yeah. Space, bro. International space station, yes.
SPEAKER_02You could be at this point in the ocean and be closer to people in space than any land near you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. No thanks. Where is it?
SPEAKER_02This is giving me an existential crisis. So it's in the South Pacific Ocean. It's roughly midway between New Zealand and Chile. Oh. Um, it sits 1,670 miles or 2,688 kilometers away from the three nearest coastlines. I have a picture for you.
SPEAKER_03I want to see it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's Point Nemo. Yeah. So it is That is vast. Vast. It's scary. Um, this point, Point Nemo, is like I said, closer to the astronauts aboard the International Space Station flying overhead about 258 miles up, and pretty closer to any human on Earth.
SPEAKER_03So sorry, on that picture there was like a tiny, tiny little island at like 10 30 o'clock.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Those people are out in the middle of nowhere too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03If anybody is on that island. Do you know what island that is? I don't. That's okay.
SPEAKER_02I I mean geography is not my strong seat, though.
SPEAKER_03I'm not a geographer.
SPEAKER_02I'm not a geographer. If I when I was looking this up, they said the three nearest coastlines were Deucey Island. I shit you not Deucey, D-U-C-I-E, Montanui, and Mayor Island. So those were the three closest coastlines.
SPEAKER_03I bet it's is it like a hot tourist spot? Because people are like, I've been to Nemo. No.
SPEAKER_02Point Nemo. So actually, no, because there's nothing there. There's no land. I know.
SPEAKER_03But people are gonna people and they're gonna be like, I have been closer to the ISS than no.
SPEAKER_02Maybe if they did, uh we don't nobody knows, or at least I don't know. Mainly what this this area in the ocean is used for is a spacecraft cemetery. Oh, yeah. So space agencies use this remote ocean zone to intentionally crash decommissioned satellites and and space stations.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because it's it's safe.
SPEAKER_02It's safe. Safe for you know humans, yeah. Not any of the marine life. It's estimated based on an article from Discover magazine that over 260 pieces of space debris are down there, and the ISS is actually scheduled to be dumped there in twenty thirty one.
SPEAKER_03Oh wow.
SPEAKER_02Crazy, huh?
SPEAKER_03What a life.
SPEAKER_02I know. So is this where the ocean monsters are? Yes.
SPEAKER_03Probably. How deep is it? You don't you probably don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how deep it is, but that's none of your business. So people actually used to think, um, due to a recording in 1997 called The Bloop, um, that there was a sea monster here. So the bloop is a mysterious ultra low frequency sound recorded, and I'm gonna play it for you. Okay. Are you ready? Can you hear that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's not the bloop.
SPEAKER_03Crazy. I hear that every day.
SPEAKER_02Sounds just like Microsoft. Where's the speaker?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I literally just work here.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03You ready for this?
SPEAKER_02That literal like bloop bloop sound?
SPEAKER_03Oh.
SPEAKER_02People are like, that's for sure a monster.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I don't I'm not worried about that. That sounded very That's good. That sounded very um tame to me. If it had like spoken words to me, maybe we'd think about it. Maybe there are like sirens out there.
SPEAKER_02Maybe. Um I'm glad it didn't worry you though, because this has been debunked to actually be the sound of massive Antarctic ice quakes fracturing glaciers.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Um, which honestly, in my opinion, is more scary.
SPEAKER_03Like Yeah, we don't have to go there.
SPEAKER_02Ice quakes, yeah. Um, so anyways. So yeah, that's on Point Nemo. And I never ever I don't want to go there ever.
SPEAKER_03So you're not scheduling your next PTO no Point Nemo. Okay. No. Good to know. Don't don't look for Ashley at Point Nemo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, please she won't be there. Don't recommend going to Point Nemo either. Please stay near land. That's that's a long ways to be from land.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's kind of like going to four corners in the United States, like you want to touch all four corners. It's like a landmark you want to go to. Maybe people want to go to Point Nemo. Maybe there's like a a buoy out there or something. Don't do it.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I would assume there's probably not a buoy because they're crashing stuff in there all the time. Unless they're like unless there's just like a giant target.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's the target. It's like, hey guys, try and try and get 20 points.
SPEAKER_02We don't need math, we just need a target in the middle of the ocean. So there's often a meme going around the internet or a you know, a viral internet rumor that NASA abruptly stopped exploring the ocean in 1978 because they found something scary.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I've never heard that.
SPEAKER_02You haven't?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02Well, good, because it's actually false. So in actuality, their CSAT satellite encountered a short circuit and pretty much ended the mission after only 105 days of operation. So they had a mission going in 1978 and they stopped because basically their equipment was trash. Like it Oops. Yeah. Essentially the pressure was too much for the tech at the time, so they had to table it. And instead, since space is a vacuum, spacecraft don't have to stand as much pressure, like withstand as much pressure. And so it's easier to make them with lighter materials and shoot them suckers up there. Sure, sure, sure. So space is essentially just easier to explore than the ocean. It's not as heavy or dark, but we all know the the real reason that NASA stopped exploring the ocean is that it's the US just wanted to play whose rocket is bigger with the Soviets.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But you know what? Like, let's be real. Like, the next person to go really deep in the ocean is gonna be like super cool. And like you should take your submersible down there with all sorts of fun people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03Like, stop being so baby. Like, stop being such a baby.
SPEAKER_02Come on, Elon. Just do it. Just try it. For science. I bet you can make a Tesla into a submersible with a bulletproof window.
SPEAKER_03No, it's the first, the first cyber truck to go into the ocean. Try it.
SPEAKER_02Just see. Just see. Come on.
SPEAKER_03You're such a baby.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. What a girl. Okay, so, anyways, NASA has continued to work with scientists around the world to study the ocean. And as recently as 2021, NASA announced the creation of Orpheus, which is an underwater vehicle that can travel to extreme depths.
SPEAKER_03It uses tech similar to the Mars rover, but does it have a PlayStation 4 remote controller?
SPEAKER_02I don't think so. I do have a list of billionaires we could send down with it though, just in case. Just do it. Like stop being a baby. Come on. You guys don't even have that much money if you can't build a submersible to go into the ocean.
SPEAKER_03So embarrassing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. What kind of money do you have if you can't even go into Point Nemo?
SPEAKER_03None.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, sure. You've climbed Mount Everest, but have you ever gone to the deepest parts of the ocean? Have you ever gone the opposite way? Yeah. That's weak sauce, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You're not that impressive.
SPEAKER_02Like we're just like actively encouraging people to like. Nope. Billionaires. They're not people.
SPEAKER_03They're not people.
SPEAKER_02They're not people. Oh, okay. From creepy shore to deep deep horrors. So maybe it's just because I have only ever lived in a landlocked state. But the ocean freaks me out. Like it's and I'm not saying I hate the ocean. In fact, it's quite the opposite. It's absolutely beautiful and powerful, but she deserves respect. And I'm gonna admire her from a safe distance, preferably on land.
SPEAKER_03If I were to ever move from this home that you and I are currently sitting in, if I were to remove this home, it needs to be somewhere within close distance to an ocean. Yeah. That's my one negotiable.
SPEAKER_02I will say that it is the ocean is powerful, especially when you talk about the free electrons and stuff there, like that it just impact people's health and well-being. I think that's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Assault therapy.
SPEAKER_02Assault therapy. But I I just it's scary, man. Hurricanes and all of that stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And flooding, and like there was like those the yeah, we know the Naples floods.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, floods, all of that stuff. So for you crazies out there doing your deep sea fishing and cruises, let me put you onto some of the creepies in the oceans, and we're gonna start close to the shore and make our way out to the deep deep. Okay. So closest to the shoreline, the shoreline shallows. Have you ever heard of sneaker waves?
SPEAKER_03No. So these I'm not a I'm not a strong swimmer, so I don't go out far.
SPEAKER_02That's okay. You don't even have to go out far. You can be on land for these.
SPEAKER_03Oh, cool.
SPEAKER_02So they're more common on steep coastlines in the Pacific Northwest, Western Canada, Iceland, and Australia. These are completely unpredictable, powerful waves that appear without warning on calm days and drag heavy sand, large logs, and sometimes even people out to sea. They just snatch you. Okay. They're huge and they snatch you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they just they get hungry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like the ocean decided it wanted to snack. Yeah. Exactly. That's exactly what they're doing.
SPEAKER_03And you're the you're on the menu.
SPEAKER_02So if you feel like having nightmares, look up sneaker waves.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But you said it occurs on like um cliffsides.
SPEAKER_02Steeper coastlines, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm not standing on a steeper coastline.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, but like it maybe I am, I don't know. There's videos of people getting snatched, man. There's a video when I was looking into this of some lady and her kid getting snatched off the off the freaking beach. Yeeks. Creepy. Okay. The next thing is rip currents. So Rip curl. Everybody kind of knows about rip currents. They act like a silent invisible conveyor belt that ends up pulling swimmers further away from the beach. They are scary as shit, man. Oh, for sure. I and what do they say with rip currents? You're supposed to just play dead. Oh, really? I thought you were supposed to swim parallel. Oh. Or is that something different? I don't know. Don't come to me for your beach safety.
SPEAKER_03I think um a rip current, yeah. You'd go parallel.
SPEAKER_02Parallel to get out of it.
SPEAKER_03I I was thinking of a bear.
SPEAKER_02A bear attack.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a bear attack. Just act dead.
SPEAKER_02That's what I would feel like if I was dead current. Just just I would be dead. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The next thing is kind of No, that playing dead, not playing dead, but um, I think that's what happens when you get pulled into like the river current. What are those called?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Look at my hand motion. It's a spiral.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Is it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's that for sure. That's for sure that. No, I don't know what it is. It's uh an undertow.
SPEAKER_02Undertoe.
SPEAKER_03I think undertoe you're supposed to like just plate it.
SPEAKER_02Like just don't fight against it.
SPEAKER_03Or a bear attack, yeah. And it'll yeah, and it'll eventually like just spit you out. Maybe. You know what? We'll look it up after, so nobody needs to tell us what it is. Or you can if you want to engage with us. Tell you know what? Tell us what it is. The ocean is none of my business. Well, no, I'm talking in like rivers.
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I don't know, maybe not in rivers.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. It's none of my business.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Feel free to tell us because I am curious, and I'm not gonna look it up after like I said I was going to. I won't, for sure.
SPEAKER_02So another thing that you can encounter from the ocean, but closest to the shore, are cone snails. So they look like beautiful, harmless seashells on the shore, but their venomous harpoons can trigger instant paralysis and have no nor known antivenom. Anti-venom, yeah. So medical professionals can really only keep you on life support until the toxins naturally wear off. But it's like a it shoots like a combination. And I have a picture right here of a little a little cone snail for you.
SPEAKER_01Narr.
SPEAKER_02Um they shoot like a natural like neurochemical that just basically like paralyzes you, and part of that is paralyzing your diaphragm so you can't breathe.
SPEAKER_03So I have so you go on life support until it just wears off, and then you're like if they get to you in time, I'm ready to I'm ready to go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Okay. But there's no there's no anti-venoms.
SPEAKER_03Jeez, no.
SPEAKER_02When you are picking up seashells off of the ocean floor, be careful. Because these are like the beautiful ones that are like the spirally. The spiraly, like the conch. Yeah, the cone ones. They're look them up, they're scary. Be careful.
SPEAKER_03I thought you were gonna talk about have you ever seen the like the sand bugles? Those are cool.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_03Do you know what a bugle is? No, you know, like the bugle chips? Yeah, they're I don't know how they form, but they're you can find them sometimes, and they're made of sand, but then they just crumble under your fingers. Sand bugles. Yeah, they're cool. But they're not poisonous, they're just for fun.
SPEAKER_02No, um, they're like like this. These beautiful shells.
SPEAKER_03Oh jeez, those are scary. They're beautiful. Are beautiful, but they And you would feel like um you would feel very blessed to find one of those, and you would absolutely just pick it up with your whole heart, and then it stings you.
SPEAKER_02And then this little guy comes out with his little with his little pokey.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_02Pokes it. So it's not a dead.
SPEAKER_03So it's not the shell that's causing the problem, it's the guy the living on the inside.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So make sure, I mean, give it a good tap with something that's not part of your body to see if there's something in it, and then don't pick it up.
SPEAKER_03Pick it up, just barely touch in with your little your little ginger fit tips.
SPEAKER_02Don't touch it with your fingers. Don't do it. 10 out of 10, don't recommend. Anyways.
SPEAKER_03Sometimes I think about I'm like, if everybody takes a handful of shells, we're all the shells are gonna be gone.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and you don't need them in your house.
SPEAKER_03No, because they stink.
SPEAKER_02And also just leave the ocean where it's at, please. Stop touching stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Just look with your eyes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You freak.
SPEAKER_02So that was on the shore. Those are things that can get to us as we're like a little bit wading in. We're gonna go leave the beach behind and look at where the lights start today.
SPEAKER_03Okay, that's not where I'm going, but that's okay. Yeah. Let's talk about it for other people.
SPEAKER_02So this, so what we're gonna talk about is what the Googles called the Twilight Zone. So it's 200 to a thousand meters deep in the ocean. This is called the deep scattering layer. So there this is a massive false ocean floor detected by sonar. It's actually a dense ceiling of millions of marine animals that hide in the dark during the day and migrate to the surface at night.
SPEAKER_03Sick.
SPEAKER_02No, none of my business. No, none of my business. No, no.
SPEAKER_03You don't need to know anything about that.
SPEAKER_02Nope. So that's all. I don't I don't want to do that. That's all. That's all we need to know. One of the creatures down there is called the barrel eye fish. I recommend you go look this up. It's a creature with a completely transparent head and glowing green tublier eyes that rotate inside the skull to look upward for shadows. And I'm telling you right now, dude, I have a picture. This guy looks super chill, but you know he's feral. Nightmares. Nightmares, bro. This is the type of shit the horror movies are makeup. Like, like he looks like he's like just chilling. But there was a video in this on this website where I looked at these.
SPEAKER_03Does he have does he have like a a greenery growing on his head? What is that?
SPEAKER_02No, that's his eyeballs.
SPEAKER_03I thought his eyeballs are right here.
SPEAKER_02I think I don't know what those are.
SPEAKER_03Pass me that.
SPEAKER_02Because it says it's said in there and the video it shows it, but like I know, right?
SPEAKER_03It's so Maybe those are maybe the things that I think are eyes are nostrils. Maybe.
SPEAKER_02But it said those eyes can rotate like 360 degrees and look upwards and down. Like creepy things.
SPEAKER_03That's an alien.
SPEAKER_02Creepy things. The aliens are in the ocean.
SPEAKER_03That's a unidentified foreign object. What do we call them?
SPEAKER_02UAP?
SPEAKER_03UAP. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Unidentified aerial phenomenon.
SPEAKER_03That's not in the air though.
SPEAKER_02Unidentified phenomenon.
SPEAKER_03UP.
SPEAKER_02Ocean phenomenon? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03U O P.
SPEAKER_02U. I do go P.
SPEAKER_03U go P.
SPEAKER_02Alright. Going deep into the midnight zone and below, a thousand plus meters. So now we're in total darkness. Like, even if your eyes are open, it seems like it's like dark. But you're also getting just crushed. Yeah, this is where the ocean is actively trying to crush us. So there are things down there called hydrothermal black smoker vents. So they tower 18 stories and they're chimneys that spew toxic boiling water.
SPEAKER_03Why is it toxic? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02It just that's what it says.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_0218-story chimneys spewing toxic boiling water where prehistoric looking tube worms thrive completely independent of the sun. Look at these suckers.
SPEAKER_03So they sent something down there, lit it up.
SPEAKER_02Yep. That's another one of the things they say that's hard to explore the ocean is that um you need light as well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And that's a lot of light.
SPEAKER_02That's a lot of light. Wow. So yeah, and apparently down there there's there's things that still live down there. Like it's just freaking wild to me. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Did they get a sample of that toxic plume? I don't know. Probably. Probably. Probably not. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. The next thing is marine snow. Have you ever heard of marine snow? A continuous ghostly drizzle of organic debris, dead animal parts, and fecal matter drifting down from the surface.
SPEAKER_03It's the foam. It's the foam on top that just like Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's a primary food source for the horrors at the bottom. And it gives a whole new meaning to that Taylor Swift song Snow at the Beach. So this is what it looks like.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. You've seen those videos of like you see the underwater stuff and you see just like crap floating.
SPEAKER_02So that's that's poop and body barts. Yeah. That's okay. Creepy creepy. Dexter's kills. It's all the kills in Dexter. Um so that's called marine snow, and it's freaky. Gross. Gross. Um, and then just generally speaking, like I said, the unknown. So we don't know a whole lot about what's going on down there. We don't know what kind of animals live down there, and that is what freaks me out the most.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I'm willing to bet that the call is coming from inside the house, friends. That that scary shit? No. Ocean. Down. It's not up there. It's in the ocean.
SPEAKER_03What if there are aliens down there?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. There was a good movie, I don't remember what it's called, but it came out when I was a teenager, and it's about um people building robots to like fight the fight the aliens coming out of the ocean.
SPEAKER_03Never heard that.
SPEAKER_02I can't remember what it's called, but it was a good one. Sure.
SPEAKER_03Sure, Dan.
SPEAKER_02Probably gonna have to do that. So get your robot skills building. Okay. Speaking of the robot Olympics. Have you seen this in China right now? I've been posting stuff on our Instagram stories and it oh it cracks me up so much. It's so funny.
SPEAKER_03So do better things with your money.
SPEAKER_02Have you seen that?
SPEAKER_03Be dolly in a world full of Donald's, be a dolly. But have you seen they're just running into walls? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Cheerleader ones.
SPEAKER_03I haven't seen the cheerleader ones. All over. But I've just seen them like.
SPEAKER_02So funny.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03It honestly just makes me be like, okay, we're still okay for a minute.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So now that we've talked about scary things in the ocean and why I really don't I don't want to do it. I don't want to go deep into the ocean. I don't want to. Um, we're gonna play a game of Would You Rather? Okay. Are you ready?
SPEAKER_03I guess.
SPEAKER_02Would you rather go on a cruise at Point Nemo or be on the ocean during a storm? Like those videos where you can see like the huge waves. Like that's what I'm envisioning. Like, I don't want to do it either.
SPEAKER_03I don't want to go on a cruise again.
SPEAKER_02Would you rather cruise to Point Nemo?
SPEAKER_03But you're I mean you're on a cruise, it's it's like I guess that one, because and I take my chances that they're not being a storm. Cause I those storm videos, like scary.
SPEAKER_02No, scary.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_02It makes me think a lot about our ancestors and how brave they were to go from their homes to on a boat with with some guy.
SPEAKER_03Like, oh I guess we'll see, but you also see those videos that just have tons of shipping containers that just fall into the ocean, and I was like, man, like so people just like lose their shit, like yeah, that's where your Amazon package is as like petty as that is. Like, I'm like, oh, that's funny.
SPEAKER_02Also, why are we polluting the ocean? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Stop.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Um would you rather get stung by a cone snail, but you survive, or be stranded in the ocean on a boat by yourself?
SPEAKER_03Get stung. Okay. For sure.
SPEAKER_02All right. Would you rather explore the dark Mariana Trench or explore outer space?
SPEAKER_03So even hearing all this stuff, I would rather explore the ocean. Like space to me just feels like you get out there and it's like, who's to say you come back?
SPEAKER_02It's the same thing with the ocean. Well, except for you could be crushed to death. We know for a fact that you could be crushed to death.
SPEAKER_03Well, I wouldn't be so stupid as to go into a one that's controlled by a PlayStation 4 controller.
SPEAKER_02Fair. But you're also not a billionaire, so also true.
SPEAKER_03So I'm not even gonna have the opportunity. Yeah, no, I'm not going into space. I like no.
SPEAKER_02I think I would rather explore space. It feels lighter.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but like you get out there and like what if you happen to like go outside the ship, you're gone. You're gone, girl.
SPEAKER_02Floating. I mean, the same thing with the ocean though. You're just floating. Where are you gonna go?
SPEAKER_03Up.
SPEAKER_02Up. Yeah. Until until something pulls you back down.
SPEAKER_03Oh.
SPEAKER_02Again, we don't know what's down there.
SPEAKER_03None of my business.
SPEAKER_02At least we don't know yet of anything out in space that can like eat ya. You know? I don't want to. Just no oxygen.
SPEAKER_03Well, I guess there's no oxygen down there too. I don't know. For whatever in my in my heart, it just feels like the ocean is safer than outside.
SPEAKER_02Nope. I'm going to space.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02You have fun in the ocean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'll be in this.
SPEAKER_02I'll be in the sky.
SPEAKER_03You too, man. Good luck.
SPEAKER_02And finally, would you rather have flippers for feet or a mermaid tail? Oh.
SPEAKER_03Oh. Definitely mermaid tail.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think we all want to be mermaids.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's cute.
SPEAKER_02We'll go to the pool sometimes and I'll like, you guys want to play mermaids?
SPEAKER_03Do they do kids still play with the mermaid tales at the pool or not really? I think so. Those are cute.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes, yeah. Mine don't have any.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you should get them some.
SPEAKER_02I'm a little freaked out about them not being able to use their legs.
SPEAKER_03Well, like they could have a life jacket on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's true. Well, that's all I have. Okay. So I'm going to post the resources for the things. I'm I'm going to try to remember to post the resources for this episode in the show.
SPEAKER_03We always say that and we never do it.
SPEAKER_02But I have some links because those pictures are creepy. Some of these, like things that I was reading, you could just spend hours looking at it's fascinating. And I'm going to keep researching from my comfortable spot on land.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02With both feet on the ground. With both feet on the ground. But yeah. So remember that the ocean is none of our business and remember to stay human. Stay curious. And don't let the robots win. Bye.
